Sommarö

The place

Historic Vartiotupa (guard cabin) of Sommarö, managed by Metsähallitus in the municipality of Mustasaari (Ostrobothnia) within the Merenkurkku World Heritage area. A military ammunition depot and coastal fortification site from 1940 to 2000 — a network of roads, electricity and water supply, several building foundations, a dock, gun emplacements and bunkers remain. Only the vartiotupa and its annex remain standing. The cabin is rented out in full (huoltotupa, mainly for day use) to school groups and outings. The site has a lean-to shelter, a fireplace, a woodshed, a compost toilet, a nature trail and a landing stage. Metsähallitus renovation completed. Booking via Eräluvat.fi.
