Slaty Creek Hut

The place

Historic hut situated at 422 m in the Ahaura River and Lake Brunner catchments (West Coast). Built in 1952 as a winter project by deer cullers, likely to replace an earlier structure destroyed by fire. Hand-built construction from hand-sawn tōtara boards, corrugated iron roof, open fireplace, four bunks, built-in benches. Set in a small clearing at the confluence of Slaty Creek and the Waiheke River. Free access, no charge. No DOC-marked track leads there: independent navigation by map, compass or GPS is required, along with river-crossing skills. A notable heritage feature: hand-hewn tōtara joinery, rarely preserved in modern huts. Map BU22, NZTM2000 E1524841, N5289303.
