The place

DOC standard hut with four bunks in Ruahine Forest Park (Manawatu/Whanganui). Stone-and-cement structure measuring 4 x 2.4 m, **built in 1920**, with a hipped roof, corrugated iron cladding, a fireplace, and a concrete floor. Located in a clearing surrounded by pines near the Taruarau River. Originally a Big Hill Station rabbiter's hut, later used by government hunters and then recreational hunters. Conservation work completed in 1998. **Access via No Man's Road through Big Hill Station — a ballot permit is required.** Short track from No Man's Road to Ruahine Hut, then north through regenerating forest to Shutes Hut.
