Shelter Rock Hut

The place

A 22-bunk "serviced" DOC hut at 932 m in Mount Aspiring National Park (Otago, NZ), on the Rees-Dart Track. Access is 6-8 hours/19 km from the Muddy Creek car park, or 4-6 hours/10 km from Dart Hut. First-come-first-served, no bookings: honesty-box tickets (adults NZ$25, youth 5-17 NZ$12.50, under 5s free). Backcountry pass valid only from 30 May to 30 September. Water and toilets available for campers. A takahē conservation area: 18 birds were released into the Rees Valley in February 2025; keep your distance and report any sightings outside the valley.
