Shallow Bay Hut

The place

A standard 6-bunk hut managed by the Department of Conservation (DOC) in Fiordland National Park, on the shore of Lake Manapouri (South Island, New Zealand), at 183 m elevation. Access via the Kepler Track, 1 h 30 from the Rainbow Reach car park, or by boat from the opposite shore of the lake. Rates until 30 June 2026: NZ$10/night adult, NZ$5 child (5-17), free under 5. No booking required; pay with a Standard Hut Ticket deposited in the honesty box or with an annual Backcountry Hut Pass. Didymo alert in nearby lakes: preventive measures are mandatory on the Kepler Track to protect the Iris Burn River ecosystem.
