The place

Historic 4-bunk DOC hut in Ruahine Forest Park (Hawke's Bay), with an open fireplace and river water — **many original features still intact**. **Originally built in the 1880s by a musterer for pest control work**, relocated in the 1920s, burned down in 1945; **a new 4-bunk hut was built by the NZ Forest Service in April 1959** — this is the one standing today. Access: 1 h 15 by car from Napier, DOC car park 16.5 km along Mangleton Road via SH50, Kereru Road and Big Hill Road, then a 10-minute walk. Rates: NZ$15/7.50 adult/youth, free under 5.
