The place

Basic DOC shelter at 652 m in the St James Conservation Area (Canterbury, NZ), at the site known as Scotties Camp — a historic site dating back to the musterers' era, with ruins of the original site nearby. Access from Hanmer Springs via Clarence Valley Road through Jacks Pass to Tophouse Road (~13 km). Accessible to walkers, mountain bikers and horse riders via the St James Cycle Trail; in summer, 4x4 access via Edwards Valley Track upon prior registration with DOC. Free.
