Schwarzensteinhütte - Rifugio al Sasso Nero
The place
Schwarzensteinhütte / Rifugio al Sasso Nero at 3026 m in the Aurina Valley / Ahrntal (Tauferer Ahrntal, South Tyrol, Italy), at the heart of the Zillertal Alps. The highest hut in the Zillertal Alps, with a first-rate view of peaks over 3000 m. First opened in 1894; after several changes of ownership and a long period of abandonment, the hut was rebuilt in 2017 by the Autonomous Province of Bolzano (modern, energy-efficient architecture, Stifter + Bachmann). The building was completed in 2018 on a spur at the edge of the Trippachkees glacier; electricity is 100% from natural resources (solar and meltwater from nearby glaciers). A starting point for several summit climbs; a stage on the area's high-alpine hut-to-hut routes.
Getting there
