Schutzhütte Schneeberg - Rifugio Monteneve
The place
Schneeberghütte / Rifugio Monteneve at 2355 m, in the former Schneeberg mining area (South Tyrolean side of the Stubai Alps, side valley north of the Passeier valley, South Tyrol). Silver, lead, copper and zinc blende were mined here for centuries. The Schneeberg inn in the mining hamlet of St. Martin already served as a mountain refuge in the 19th century; after the settlement was abandoned in 1967, the partially ruined manor house was converted into a refuge run by the CAI. The Autonomous Province of Bolzano, the owner, carried out an extensive restoration, and the Südtiroler Bergbaumuseum / South Tyrol Mining Museum now manages the lease, integrating the refuge into its visitor offering. Access from the Timmelsjochstraße — 2 to 4.5 hours depending on the route, moderate difficulty. Open from 15 June to 15 October.
