Schronisko PTTK Markowe Szczawiny: A Historic Mountain Hut in the Heart of the Żywiec Beskids Schronisko PTTK Markowe Szczawiny, nestled on the northern slopes of Babia Góra in the Żywiec Beskids in Poland, is a hut run by the Polish Tourist and Sightseeing Society (PTTK). History Built in 1906 at the initiative of Dr Hugo Zapałowicz, president of the Babia Góra section of the Polish Tatra Society, the hut opened its doors on 15 September 1906. Over the years, extensions were carried out between 1922 and 1934, giving it a modern and spacious character. Despite the challenges of the Second World War, the hut was preserved and used by various tourist organisations after the war. Renovation and Modernisation Between May and July 2007, the historic hut was entirely demolished to make way for a new building designed by the Pracownia Projektowa "Arch" studio of Bielsko-Biała. Opened on 25 April 2010, this new two-storey building of brick and stone offers 40 beds, a kitchen, a dining room, a drying room, and is also accessible to people with reduced mobility. Surroundings and Services Near the hut there is a GOPR mountain rescue post, a climbing area, and two large planted fir trees. Schronisko PTTK Markowe Szczawiny offers an exceptional natural setting for visitors, with outdoor activities available year-round. Booking and Practical Information Schronisko PTTK Markowe Szczawiny is open to visitors from June to September. Online bookings are required to guarantee a place during busy tourist periods.
