The place

16-bunk DOC Great Walk hut on the Heaphy Track, on the edge of Gouland Downs (Kahurangi National Park, Golden Bay). One of the seven Great Walk huts on the trail; named after John Saxon, who surveyed the route in 1886. Noted for its views and for the night calls of the great spotted kiwi. Facilities: heating, long-drop toilets with paper supplied, cold running water, gas cooker (bring your own utensils), platform bunks with mattresses (bring your own sleeping bag), no shower or lighting. Booking compulsory; Backcountry Hut Pass and standard tickets not valid.
