The place
Forest Schutzhütte set within the Naturpark Vulkanregion Vogelsberg (Hesse, Germany), the largest volcanic massif in central Europe (2500 km²). The location, at around 384 m altitude, corresponds to the lower slopes of the Hoherodskopf (764 m), the massif's highest point. The Vulkanregion Vogelsberg has a dense network of Wanderhütten typical of Hessian hiking: gazebo-style timber shelters on posts with a fixed bench-table and a roof sheltering an open hearth, designed for daytime breaks and shelter from the weather. Near the summit, the Taufsteinhütte serves as a reference point with its dining hall and inn close to the 33 m observation tower. A setting of beech forests, mixed woodland, high peat bogs (Hochmoor) and basalt formations typical of the area's former Miocene volcanism.
