The place
A basic shelter on the Island of Elba (province of Livorno, Tuscany), within the Parco Nazionale dell'Arcipelago Toscano. The area, at a low altitude (~142 m), corresponds to the wooded coastal zone of the northwest flank, in the foothills of Monte Capanne (1019 m, the island's highest point). Monte Capanne can be reached by cable car from Marciana in 14 minutes, or on foot in about 3 h 30 via the trails of the Parco Nazionale. At the Grottaccia pass (647 m), rock shelters offer basic refuge; at the summit, a small refuge allows for a meal stop. An exceptional Mediterranean setting of maquis scrubland and pine forest, with 360° views over the Tyrrhenian Sea, Corsica, Sardinia and the Tuscan archipelago. Possibility of bivouacking under the stars in the Monte Capanne area.
