The place
A forest Schutzhütte (a covered shelter with no sleeping places) at about 83 m altitude in the forests of Brandenburg, east of Berlin, in the wooded area near the Liepnitzsee (Barnim). A typical example of Northern Germany's shelter-gazebo design: a wooden post structure with a fixed bench-table and a roof covering an open hearth, meant to protect walkers from sudden rain and serve as a stop on walking trails. German Schutzhütten are not designed for overnight stays: their use is limited to daytime breaks. Numerous cycling and hiking trails run through the Naturpark Barnim, which borders the northeastern outskirts of Berlin, a mix of mixed forests (pine, birch, beech) and glacial lakes.

Trails of the Naturpark Barnim from Wandlitz, Lanke or Liepnitzsee. Accessible on foot or by bike.
