The place

Mountain cabana located in the Apuseni Mountains (Transylvanian Apennines, Romania), in the Apuseni Natural Park sector around the Padiș plateau (Bihor). The Apuseni massif, a north-western extension of the Carpathians, rises between 1300 and 1849 m (Curcubăta Mare or Bihor peak) and hosts one of Europe's richest karst systems: Cetățile Ponorului, the Scărișoara ice cave (underground glacier), Peștera Urșilor (Bears' Cave). The area is dotted with numerous pastoral cabanas (stâne) and tourist cabins run privately or by the AAR (Romanian Alpine Association). Waymarked park trails lead to Cetățile Ponorului, Bălileasa and the Cheile Galbenei gorge. A basic shelter used as a stopover on multi-day traverses of the Padiș plateau.
