The place
Basic shelter located in the Centovalli area (Ticino, Switzerland), above Lake Maggiore (Verbano) on the north-west side. Positioned at around 913 m elevation, in the lower Onsernone valley or Borgnone sector, accessible by the Centovalli railway linking Locarno to Domodossola. The region has many capanne and rifugi managed by the FAT (Federazione Alpinistica Ticinese), the CAS Locarno section and ALPA. The Rifugio Corte Nuovo (1635 m), inaugurated in 2017 on the watershed between Onsernone and Centovalli, serves as a reference point for the local shelter network: 6 beds on a mezzanine, sweeping panorama from Lake Maggiore to the Lepontine Alps. A basic shelter used by hikers on the trails crossing the hamlets of Rasa, Comino and Lionza.
