The place

An 18-bunk "serviced" hut at 899 m in Te Urewera (East Coast, NZ), on the Lake Waikareiti Walk. Managed by: Te Uru Taumatua (the operational entity of Ngāi Tūhoe). Te Urewera has the unique legal status of a "living person", governed by a dedicated board. An operational hut, retained under the withdrawal programme (unlike several other Te Urewera huts that have been decommissioned). Rates: adults $25/night, youth 5-17 $12.50, under 4 free. Online booking required (until June 2027), same-day up to 8 pm. Standard Hut Passes not accepted.
