The place

An unstaffed cabin set at 430 m in the Vallespir (Pyrénées-Orientales, France, or Catalonia-Empordà, Spain — a border area). The Catalan place name "Salt de l'Aigua" means a waterfall or water leap, suggesting a picturesque waterfall right next to the shelter. Set at low altitude (430 m) in the Catalan Pyrenean foothills, in a transition zone between the eastern foothills of the Pyrenees and the Roussillon plain. An exceptional Mediterranean-Pyrenean setting: mixed forests of holm oak, chestnut and low beech, gorges and streams typical of eastern Catalonia. The Vallespir/Empordà border area retains an outstanding cultural heritage — the tradition of the sardana dance, Catalan festivals, shared cuisine on both sides of the border. Emblematic wildlife: wild boar, roe deer, common genet, peregrine falcon, golden eagle in the heights, long-tailed tit. A stop on the cross-border trails linking the Tech valley (French Vallespir) to the Ter valley (Spanish Empordà).
