The place
Сакмариха ("Sakmariha," a Russian family name) in the East Kazakhstan region, Katon-Karagay/Belokamennaya sector (southern Altai foothills, Kazakhstan), at 832 m altitude, on the Katun Altai slope. Cabin used by loggers or herders (name Sakmariha or Sakmar-Iha, a local compound toponym), area of southern Altai taiga (Picea obovata + Pinus sibirica, Siberian pine with edible cones + Betula pendula) and the Katon-Karagay Reserve (642,000 ha, UNESCO 2018, a unique world transition zone of steppe-mongolian forest-taiga), heritage of the Kazakhs (Turco-Mongol people, 20 million, Kazakh language, traditionally nomadic, settled during the 1930s Stalinist dekulakization, 1.5 million deaths in the Asharshylyk famine).
