Saint Martin Lodge
The place
Community lodge on Quarantine Island (Kamau Taurua, Otago Harbour, NZ), at 2 m altitude, accessible by private boat. Managed by the Quarantine Island/Kamau Taurua Community. Accommodation with dormitories, kitchen, lounge, and composting toilets. Over 150 years of history: the original 1872 building served as the quarantine keeper's residence (replacing an earlier building where keeper John Dougall's family had lived since 1863). Extended in 1926 by Bob Miller using materials salvaged from the New Zealand and South Seas Exhibition (1925-1926): stained-glass windows and a Zealandia stove. Modern volunteer renovations (insulation, worktops, infrastructure). Features: 'Modern Joinery' exhibition stained-glass windows and Fijian kauri wood in the captain's cabin bedroom.
