Saarijärvi Forestry Hut

The place

Former logging camp ("savottakämppä") in Repovesi National Park (Finland), with a long history of hosting travellers passing through. Built in the late 1950s, the kämppä served as sleeping quarters and lodging for forestry workers at the Repovesi logging camps for more than a decade. Laid out in three rooms: "Kympin toimisto" (foreman's office), the housekeeper's room and "Tylsänpää" (where the workers slept — about 20 places originally for lumberjacks, stable hands and outdoor labourers). Capacity today: 8 people. Small wood-heated sauna, private kitchen with gas stove and wood stove, large yard, jetty on the water with a sandy beach suited to children. A distinctive feature: the "Wanha kämppälaki" (Old Camp Law) of 1924 remains in force; visitors must respect it. Booking runs from 1 p.m. on the arrival day to 10 a.m. on the departure day.
