The place

Free Metsähallitus päivätupa (day hut) located in Urho Kekkonen National Park, six kilometers from Saariselkä, in the fell zone between Vävypää and Vahtamapää. A day hut open year-round, shared and free, for a break without booking; overnight stays are not allowed. The site has two päivätupa for hikers; the older building, the oldest in the whole area, was built around the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, restored in 1982 by the Finnish Forest Research Institute and then placed under Metsähallitus management two years later. No drinking water (must be purified), no waste service: pack everything out with you.
