Ruigh Aiteachain
The place
Ruigh Aiteachain bothy ("Shieling of the Juniper Bush") in upper Glen Feshie (Cairngorms, Scotland), at grid reference NN 847 927. Managed and maintained by the estate, open free of charge as a shelter for hikers and mountaineers. One of the best-equipped and best-maintained bothies in Scotland. 10 sleeping places. Recently renovated stone and tin construction; composting toilets and a usable fireplace with wood supplied by the estate. Sometimes confused with "Landseer's bothy": indeed it was in this area that Sir Edwin Landseer observed and studied red deer for his famous painting "The Monarch of the Glen". Access is about 5-6 km from the car park at grid ref 853 977, about 1 km before Achlean Farm. Note: the Carnachuin bridge was washed away by the river Feshie in flood on 3 September 2009; the Pony Bridge is now the last crossing point in upper Glen Feshie.
