Rogers Hut (Te Wairoa)
The place
A Department of Conservation Standard Hut in the Whirinaki Te Pua-a-Tāne Conservation Park (East Coast / Hawke's Bay, North Island, New Zealand). Built in 1952 for deer cullers, it is one of the last three slab-beech huts remaining in the Urewera Range. Built during the winter of 1952 by a team led by Rex Forrester, who named it Rogers after his son born during construction. Six bunk beds; interior walls of beech slabs, structure of matai (Prumnopitys taxifolia). An outstanding setting by the river in the heart of native bush. No booking: first come, first served. Access via the Moerangi Track or the Te Pua-a-Tāne Circuit, favorite routes for trampers and mountain bikers.
