The place
Overnight cabin at Västerhus-Rödmyran in the Kålhuvudet nature reserve, Örnsköldsvik municipality (Västernorrland, Sweden). A 770 ha reserve of old-growth taiga with snow-laden spruce and ancient deadwood (a "John Bauer" landscape), home to rare fungi and lichens, wetlands, and wildlife (jays, three-toed woodpeckers). Sleeps 8 in 4 double beds. Facilities: wood-burning stove, table and chairs, outdoor benches, grill, wood shed, dry toilet. Open year-round. Access: a partly boardwalked trail, roughly 700 m uphill from the parking area; a stage on the Urskogsleden long-distance trail.
