Rocky Point Hut
The place
Rocky Point Hut in Fiordland National Park, Te Anau/Lake Manapouri area (Southland, South Island, New Zealand), at 29 m elevation, on the shore of Lake Manapouri (NZ's 2nd deepest lake at 444 m, after Hauroko at 462 m). Continuous Fiordland cluster (batches 306-308). A DOC hut within Te Wāhipounamu (UNESCO-listed 1990), in an area of primary beech forest. Manapouri Hydro Station (underground, built 1969-1972, 800 MW), a scheme that controversially proposed raising the lake by 5 m before the Save Manapouri campaign (1970-72) prevented it.
