Rocks Ahead Hut
The place
Hut on the true left bank of the Ngaruroro River at the central-east boundary of the so-called "Manson Country" sector in Kaweka Forest Park (Hawke's Bay, North Island, New Zealand). Built in 1960 by the former NZFS for deer-control operations; maintained to the original NZFS standard. 4 bunks. Sits at 700 m altitude on sloping ground immediately above the river, relatively sheltered from prevailing westerly winds. Located at the junction of three major trails; a typical base for hikers and hunters exploring the west of the park. A popular stop for rafting and kayaking thanks to its riverside position. Access possible via Manson Hut, Back Ridge Bivouac and Tira Lodge; a cableway crosses the Ngaruroro on some approaches.
Getting there
