Roaring Billy Hut
The place
6-bunk historic hut (standard NZFS S70 1970) with an open fireplace, in the Haast/Paringa/Moeraki rivers area, West Coast of the South Island (New Zealand). Located about 6 km from the Haast River, north bank, opposite the main road. Backcountry hut with no DOC track: navigation with map, compass and GPS required. Routes very lightly used and not regularly maintained (~4 h walking at standard pace, sometimes more). Helicopter winch site possible. Hut in good condition after recent maintenance (chimney straightened, internal cladding and ridge redone, exterior repainted, woodshed rebuilt). Managed under the Permolat community program (lead maintainer: Geoff Spearpoint). About 5 recorded visits per year, mostly in April for the deer “roar” (rut).
Getting there
~4 h walk from the Haast River, off-track navigation required.
