The place
Rifugio Zampini in the Parco dei Nebrodi, Cesarò/San Fratello sector (northern Nebrodi slope, Messina, Sicily, Italy), at 1,350 m elevation, in the Nebrodi range (Sicily's largest beech forest, an extension of the Ligurian Apennines). Continuous Sicily cluster (batches 240-332). Refuge run by the Corpo Forestale della Regione Siciliana, an area of Fagus sylvatica (the world's southernmost limit of beech forest), Ilex aquifolium "vetusti agrifogli" (4 ancient 300-year-old holly trees), and the Sanfratellano (a semi-wild horse breed, semi-endemic, about 400 individuals in the Nebrodi), heritage of the Sanfratellani (Sicily's last Gallo-Italic linguistic island, 10th century, Roger II and the Normans, 500,000 speakers as far as Rome).
