Rifugio Piccolo Pirovano
The place
High-mountain refuge at 3018 m (DB 3012 m), above the Passo dello Stelvio (province of Sondrio, Lombardy), close to the Swiss border — not Bernina/Valmalenco as one might assume. The access road — closed for twenty years — is entirely unpaved and starts from the Stelvio Pass: a 2.2 km climb, one of the highest roads in Europe. A high-altitude refuge notable for its 20th-century architecture (Albergo-Rifugio Pirovano, part of Italy's contemporary architectural heritage); a strategic stage for mountaineers in the Ortles-Cevedale sector on the Stelvio side.
Getting there
2.2 km unpaved track from Passo dello Stelvio (road closed).
The setting
Stelvio Pass, Ortles-Cevedale, Swiss border.
