Rifugio Pian delle Scagne
The place
Refuge in the Monti Simbruini range located on the Pian delle Scagne, at about 1475 m of altitude, on the border between Abruzzo (municipality of Camporotondo/Cappadocia, L'Aquila) and Lazio. A stop on the long-distance routes crossing the largest protected beech forest in Europe, in the Monti Simbruini Regional Park. Positioned at the heart of the range, on the old dirt track used in Bourbon times by the brigands who roamed the Simbruini. The refuge can be included in loops from Camporotondo via Piano Morbano, Grascitone, Fosso Fioio, Prezietta, Cesa Cotta — a historic route popular for ski touring and snowshoeing. An exceptional setting of centuries-old relict beech forests inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage. A basic refuge used mainly as a waypoint.
