The place
Refuge located in the province of Ancona (Marche, Italy), within the Parco Naturale Regionale della Gola della Rossa e di Frasassi, situated 1¼ km north of the park. A remarkable position at the heart of the karst landscape famous for the Frasassi caves and the Caverna della Valle del Vernino, next to the Grotta del Vento. The Eremo di Grottafucile (historic troglodyte hermitage) is 1 km to the east. A basic refuge used by hikers and cavers exploring this world-renowned karst network. A Mediterranean setting of limestone scrubland, cliffs and griffon vultures. A fine base for the Gola della Rossa - Grotte di Frasassi traverse, between spectacular nature and the religious heritage of the Camaldolese hermitages.
