Rifugio Monte Pravello
The place
Refuge at 951 m on the southern slope of Monte Pravello (1015 m), a mountain on the border between Italy and Switzerland, between the former Swiss municipality of Arzo and the Italian municipalities of Viggiù and Saltrio (province of Varese, Lombardy). Neighbouring Monte Orsa. The refuge is open only on Sundays, but has a small emergency shelter that is always open. Managed by the Gruppo Antincendio Val Ceresio (Firefighters' Refuge), who open it to the public from time to time. A good vantage point: sweeping views over the valley, the neighbouring peaks and the southern arms of Lake Lugano. Highly visible remains of the Linea Cadorna, a system of fortifications built during the Great War.
