Rifugio Monte Penna
The place
Rifugio "Casermette del Penna" resulting from the conversion of two forestry buildings — the main building (Rifugio Penna) with a bar-restaurant and 13 beds, plus a smaller building (Rifugio Pennino) with 12 additional beds. At 1395 m per external sources (DB 1197 m), in the municipality of Santo Stefano d'Aveto / Val d'Aveto (province of Parma, Emilia-Romagna; bordering Liguria). Private staffed refuge with meals. Access from Borgotaro (Parma-La Spezia motorway) via the road to Chiavari along the Val di Taro, then Foppiano, turning right toward Alpe, Passo della Tabella and Passo del Chiodo, then left to the refuge. Open all summer; the rest of the year on weekends and by reservation. A well-known short circuit to the summit of Monte Penna: ascent via a spectacular equipped ledge on the north face, descent through fine forest on the gentler side.
