Rifugio Monte Grosso
The place
Small forestry post of the Etna Park located on the south side of the volcano, at Nicolosi (province of Catania) on Monte Gemmellaro. The refuge is situated about 1.5 km from the Piano Bottara forestry entrance, managed by the Dipartimento Regionale Sviluppo Rurale e Territoriale. Capacity of 8 beds, water tank, fireplace, kitchen without gas bottles, basic sanitary facilities and essential furniture. Booking and key from UST DI CT (tel. 091 63 91 100). The Monte Grosso - Monte Gemmellaro geological-educational trail, dedicated to the naturalist-geologist Carlo Gemmellaro, allows visitors to observe the remains of numerous Etna eruptions since the second half of the 19th century: hornitos, pyroclastic cones, lava flows and channels. Monte Grosso (1383 m) is covered by a characteristic mixed forest.
