The place
Refuge known as "Ugni I" at 1863 m per external sources (DB lists 1809 m), on the ridge separating the Fosso la Valle from the Fiume Avello, in the Majella massif (Majella National Park, Abruzzo). Access via the forest track climbing from Cantagufo, trail G4. A scenic and stirring climb rewarded with eagle's-eye views over the hills and the Adriatic Sea; Apennine chamois frequently seen. A refuge in the CAI Abruzzo network, base for ascents of Monte d'Ugni, Cima Martellese and Cima Forcone, in a loop from Palombaro via the Fosso la Valle (Vallone d'Ugni).
