The place

An alpine refuge on Monte Subasio near Spello, run by the CAI Foligno section (Umbria, Italy). The sanctuary dedicated to the Madonna, built around 1080, is also called Madonna della Specula ("of the view") because from there you can admire almost all of Umbria, part of Tuscany and the Heritage region. On clear days, the panorama extends to Monte Vettore, Terminillo, Lake Trasimeno and Monte Amiata. The refuge is part of the Cammino di Francesco, on the Monte Subasio section between Assisi and Spello. Approach from Collepino via a moderate route of about 2 h 10, +380 m of elevation gain. The building includes a small church dedicated to the Madonna della Spella. Run by volunteers of the CAI Foligno (tel. 0742.22921 for self-catered groups).
