The place

Unstaffed refuge of the Italian Alpine Club, located at 2004 m in the Val Caronno, municipality of Piateda (SO), in the heart of the Orobie Alps. Built in 1924 by the CAI Valtellina section and dedicated "to the memory of Luigi Mambretti, who fell on the Punta Scais on 7 September 1923" at only 27 years old; a commemorative plaque was affixed on 25 September 1925. Capacity of 25 people, plus a small 2-bed winter room open in case of emergency. First renovated in the 1970s, extended at the rear in 2003. No warden: keys are collected from Arialdo Donati, inspector of the CAI Valtellina section (tel. 0342.482.000), or from the wardens of the Scais dam by paying for the night and leaving an ID document as deposit. Starting point of the most impressive stretch of the Bruno Credaro trail toward the Rifugio Donati in the upper Val Quai.

A bit of history

Le refuge a été dédié par le CAI de Sondrio à Luigi Mambretti, alpiniste mort en 1923 à l'âge de 27 ans sur la Punta Scais. Il a été rénové dans les années 1970 et agrandi en 2003.
