The place

The highest and largest refuge around Cortina d'Ampezzo, at 2752 m atop Monte Lagazuoi (Dolomites, Veneto), above the Passo Falzarego halfway between Cortina d'Ampezzo and the Val Badia. Has the most panoramic terrace in the Dolomites. Capacity of 74 beds in private rooms and dormitories. Restaurant seating 100 indoors and 200 outdoors. Built in 1964-65 by local mountain guide Ugo Pompanin, a great climber who made numerous first ascents in the Dolomites. Still run by the Pompanin family, now in its third generation.
