The place
A mountain refuge in the municipality of Samo in the Metropolitan City of Reggio Calabria, in the heart of the Aspromonte National Park (Calabria, Italy). Located at 1637 m in the Ionian highlands of the Aspromonte, near the high-altitude basins that spread out below the Montalto (1955 m), the massif's highest point. The refuge serves as a base for outings in the wild central area of the park, terrain rich in beech and Calabrian pine forests, home to the Apennine wolf and the golden eagle. A basic refuge accessible to hikers; opening conditions vary and should be checked with the Aspromonte National Park or CAI Reggio Calabria. Connects to the trails of the Sentiero del Brigante and routes to the Mundu and Forgiarelle waterfalls.
