The place

Unstaffed refuge at 2130 m in the Valle Sacra (Castelnuovo Nigra, province of Turin, Piedmont, Italy). Winter section always open; the rest of the refuge closed, keys to be collected from the Bar Morgana in Castelnuovo Nigra (+39 0124 659650) or from the Associazione Amici della Montagna (+39 340 254 9242 / +39 339 104 3292). With the keys: ground floor with stove, firewood, gas kitchen and sanitary facilities; upper floor with a 15-bed dormitory, mattresses and a few blankets. Lighting and phone charging via a photovoltaic system. Access summer and winter by car from Castelnuovo Nigra via the narrow paved Cava road to Pian delle Nere, then on foot via an unpaved track and path (difficulty E) in 2h15. Monte Verzel festival on the second Saturday of August.
