The place
Forest refuge near Cammarata, in the Parco dei Sicani (Monti Sicani, west-central Sicily), between the provinces of Palermo and Agrigento. A popular starting point for hiking and mountain biking in the massif. The Castronovo di Sicilia - Capelvenere loop from the Rifugio Forestale Serra Canale is a difficult 21.2 km route with significant elevation gain, typically over 6 hours of walking. The Rifugio Serra Canale - Portella della Venere - Portella dei Daini route ranks among the best hikes in the Parco dei Sicani, with about +750 m of elevation gain. The area lies in the eastern foothills of the Monte Cammarata, home to oak groves, relict beech forests and Sicilian botanical endemics. A basic forest refuge, to be used by arrangement with the Corpo Forestale Regionale.
