Rifugio Femmina Morta
The place
Rifugio of the Monti Simbruini located near Monte Viglio, in the province of L'Aquila (Abruzzo), on the wooded slopes of Monte Femmina Morta and Viglio, near the watershed line separating Lazio from Abruzzo. Access from Piano Sacramento in the Zompo lo Schioppo Nature Reserve (reachable from Avezzano), or from Cassino/Sora via the A1, following the SS 82 to Morino and then the Reserve road. The Valle di Femmina Morta is a vast suspended plateau known for its lunar landscape and the near-total absence of human traces. Note: the old rifugio was dismantled in summer 2022; check current conditions before setting out. Classic loop of the area: Meta - Rifugio Cerasoli - Rifugio Femmina Morta - Rifugio Tassari (33.2 km, 11-12 h).
