The place
Refuge of the Monti Simbruini in the Abruzzo Marsica area, in the municipality of Castellafiume (L'Aquila). Access via a forest track from Camporotondo heading south, about 9 km round trip with 400 m of elevation gain. The refuge offers meal service and possible lodging (contact manager AEV Achille Fontani at 347 6873118 or info@geomontabruzzo.it to confirm opening, bookings and other information). Two main hiking options: the short Camporotondo-refuge traverse, and the long loop that departs from and returns to the refuge through the forests near the Piani della Renga. Set in the Monti Simbruini, a little-visited area rich in old-growth beech forests and iconic wildlife (wolf, and more rarely the Marsican brown bear).
