Rifugio Alpe Revolte
The place
An unstaffed free refuge ("unmanned cabin") at 1698 m in the Tambo massif, in the Valchiavenna area (province of Sondrio, Lombardy, Italy). A remarkable position on the eastern foothills of the Tambò massif (3279 m), the high point of the ridge separating Valchiavenna from the San Giacomo valley and the Swiss border (canton of Graubünden). An old alpine pasture building converted into a shelter for hikers and summer shepherds. An exceptional mineral and forested setting in the high Lepontine/Rhaetian valleys: larches, Swiss stone pines, subalpine meadows, and views of the Tambò massif and the Mesolcina range. Iconic wildlife: chamois, ibex (reintroduced), marmot, golden eagle, bearded vulture (reintroduced to the Alps in 1986). Located just off the major Valchiavenna-Madesimo-Switzerland routes, a possible stop on the cross-border loops of the Madesimo/Splügen/Mesolcina area.
