The place
A casera-hut in the Forni Avoltri area (Carnia, province of Udine, Friuli-Venezia Giulia), a stop on the Alta Via di Incarojo (a three-day route) between the ricovero del Mestri and the casera Turrie. Forni Avoltri nestles on the banks of the Degano torrent at the heart of the Carnic Alps, at the foot of Monte Coglians (2780 m), the highest peak in the region. The area has a dense network of trails linking rifugi and malghe — stages for multi-day traverses (the Marinelli, Tolazzi and Lambertenghi trails being the best known). A basic shelter, unstaffed, relying on volunteer maintenance.
