Ricovero Casera Valbinon (Valmenon)
Casera Valmenon
The place
Casera-refuge known as Valmenon (or Valbinon) at 1778 m in the Dolomiti Friulane Nature Park, in the municipality of Forni di Sopra (Udine, FVG), in a larch forest. Accessible on foot only (2 to 4 h depending on pace and route). From as early as 1575, the casera was the subject of disputes between residents of upper Val Cimoliana (Cimolais) and upper Val Tagliamento (Forni di Sopra). Used for lower-priority grazing until the years before the Second World War, the communal casera fell into ruin and was then rebuilt after the collapse of the stable in the 1960s. In summer, it offers hospitality and information to passing hikers and multi-day trekkers; generally run from mid-June to mid-September (weather permitting). Kitchen, fireplace, tables and benches on the ground floor; upstairs, a large dormitory with 12 bunk beds plus 7 camp beds.
