Ricovero Casa Cadorna
The place
Historic First World War shelter located on Monte Castellazzo/Gradina, one of the karst heights near Doberdò del Lago (province of Gorizia, Friuli-Venezia Giulia). Built between 1916 and 1917 by Italian soldiers near the Gradina Visitor Centre, on the flank of Monte Castellazzo; its location, fully sheltered from enemy attack, also meant it served as a military command post. It was named after General Luigi Cadorna, head of the Italian Supreme Command. Today the building serves as a base for "Walk of Peace" excursions and the nearby rock climbing site. Access on foot or by mountain bike from Doberdò del Lago via the CAI 77 trail, which ends near the lake; after about 2 km, one reaches the Casa Cadorna shelter. Managed by CAI Gorizia.
