The place
Rerekapa Hut in Egmont National Park, Ōkurukuru/Ōpunake area (Taranaki, North Island, New Zealand), at 269 m elevation, on the southwest flank of Mount Taranaki (2518 m, an almost perfectly conical andesitic stratovolcano, the "Fuji of the South"). Continuous Taranaki cluster (batches 220-335). DOC hut in the Kapuni River basin, in a forest belt ecotype of the volcano (Kai Iwi Waitī basin), in an area with rimu podocarp (Dacrydium cupressinum) and mixed kahikatea + rimu forest, on the heritage lands of Ngā Iwi o Taranaki (8 iwi); Mount Taranaki was granted legal personhood status in 2017 under the Te Awa Tupua Bill, the first river/mountain in the world to be recognized as a legal person.
