Refugiul Coștila
The place
Historic alpine refuge of the Romanian Carpathians, built in 1937 at 1690 m in the Valea Coștilei on the eastern side of the Bucegi plateau (municipality of Bușteni). Originally made of wood, it was created on the initiative of Niculae Baticu — considered the father of Romanian mountaineering — and the Romanian Alpine Club; it hosted Romania's first mountaineering school. Capacity of 20-25 people, bivouac-style. No water on site: the nearest spring is about a 20-minute walk uphill. The building was recently refurbished free of charge by the company Masterbuild in partnership with the Romanian Alpine Club. The refuge serves as headquarters for climbers on the great historic walls of the Abruptul Prahovean: Peretele Văii Albe, Peretele Coștilei, Peretele Gălbinele. Access from Bușteni via the Alpine Cabin "La Măsurătoarea Ursilor" (1310 m) then a blue-marked trail towards Valea Albă and Coștila.
